Guns and Driving

Guns exist to kill.  In Australia, guns have saved lives against attacks by animals and warring peoples.   Guns are useful in the pastoral and agriculture industries.

Guns also take and threaten lives.  Guns are violent, no matter what their use.

The gun control debate reflects the growing concern for the quality of life within our society in both the country and city areas.

The Port Arthur massacre has forced us to question where we are heading.   Do we want to continue to evolve in the American pattern, where we gain untold material riches and things money can buy, but at a huge cost to peace of mind, real security, and that sense of community we still have bits of in WA?

A startling list of Safety Tips for motorists has been published by Avis, the second largest (We Try Harder) car rental firm in America.  The following suggestions, they say,  are to make your trip "safer and more enjoyable."

Consider what the daily life and consciousness of the average American citizen must be like if these behaviours make life more enjoyable:

  1. "If your vehicle is bumped from behind, do not stop on the roadway or shoulder.  Drive to the nearest public area and call for police assistance.  Dial 911.
  2. Do not stop for flashing white lights.  Lights on US emergency vehicles are red or red and blue.
  3. Do not pick up hitchhikers under any circumstances.
  4. If your car is malfunctioning, drive to a well-lit area before stopping.  Call the (Avis) 24-hour emergency road service.
  5. If someone on the roadside needs assistance, it is best to call the police when you get to the nearest telephone.
  6. Prior to departure, be certain you know the route to your destination.  If you must ask directions, ask a police officer or find a well-lit public place.
  7. Have your keys in hand and ready when approaching your vehicle.  Check interior of vehicle before unlocking doors.
  8. Keep doors and windows locked.  Keep your valuables locked in the trunk or glove compartments.
  9. Always park in well-lit areas.  If you are parking in daylight and must return after dark, be aware of lot lighting."

Would you like to live like this?  Let's de-violence our lives now, before it is too late.  Controlling who owns guns is a first very important step to a better world.
